Focus and Scope
The Journal of Cognition, the official journal of the European Society for Cognitive Psychology, publishes reviews, empirical articles (including registered reports), data reports, stimulus development reports, comments, and methodological notes relevant to all areas of cognitive psychology, including attention, memory, motor control, numerical cognition, perception, psycholinguistics, and reasoning. We also publish cross-disciplinary research if we judge that it has clear implications for development of cognitive psychological theories. As a signatory of the Center for Open Science's Transparency and Openness Promotion guidelines, we value methodological rigour and transparent scientific practices. We welcome submissions from scholars working anywhere in the world.
The journal is published online as a continuous volume and issue throughout the year. Articles are made available as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in getting content publicly available.
Special collections of articles are welcomed and will be published as part of the normal issue, but also within a separate collection page.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. There is no embargo on the journal’s publications. Submission and acceptance dates, along with publication dates, are made available on the PDF format for each paper.
Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.
Authors are encouraged to publish their data in recommended repositories. For a list of generic and subject specific repositories that meet our peer review criteria, see here.
The journal’s publisher, Ubiquity Press, focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. Content is also archived around the world to ensure long-term availability.

Annotation and post-publication comment
The journal platform permits readers to leave comments on the publication page, via the Disqus service. Readers will need a Disqus account to leave comments. Comments may be moderated by the journal, however, if they are non-offensive and relevant to the publication subject, comments will remain online without edit.
The journal platform also includes in-browser annotation and text highlighting options on full text formats via hypothes.is. Readers will require a hypothes.is account to create annotations, and will have the option to make these publicly available, available to a group, or private.
The journal only displays advertisements that are of relevance to its scope and will be of interest to the readership. The editor, publisher and the Association have the right to decline advertisements at their total discretion.
Ads can be submitted at any time and will be posted on the website 1 week after receiving payment.
All files need to be in .jpg or .png. An accurate URL to any webpage you wish to link to must also be submitted. All advert image files must be provided to the journal.

The European Society for Cognitive Psychology (ESCoP) launched the Journal of Cognition in 2017. Noting that national funding agencies and the public at large increasingly expect scientific communications to be freely available, ESCoP was keen to promote open-access publishing with its official journal, to provide cognitive psychologists with an outlet combining transparency with rigour. In December 2016, the ESCoP executive committee unanimously voted to launch the Journal of Cognition. ESCoP is committed to producing a journal that fully promotes its content by making it perpetually available to all, and serves cognitive psychologists by encouraging high methodological standards and providing constructive expert review. The Journal of Cognition is the only official journal of the European Society for Cognitive Psychology.
